22 października 2020: Seminarium badawcze online - Marta Maj (Uniwersytet Jagielloński): Attitudes toward emerging biotechnologies. What matters and why?

Interdyscyplinarne Centrum Etyki UJ (INCET) zaprasza na seminarium badawcze w ramach projektu BIOUNCERTAINTY. Seminarium pt. “Attitudes toward emerging biotechnologies. What matters and why?" poprowadzi Marta Maj (Uniwersytet Jagielloński). Spotkanie odbędzie się w czwartek 22 października o godzinie 17:30 na platformie MS Teams (link poniżej).

Abstrakt: Biotechnology innovations are challenging and often worrisome for the public; people seem reluctant to accept the altering of human physiology or capacities. In the presented study, first in this line of research, we focus on several factors that predict attitudes toward novel achievements of medicine. Do people approve more if procedures are applied to adults? Is reversibility a game-changer? Does the aim of such procedures matter at all? How about people’s knowledge or ideology?

In our study (n=518), participants read two vignettes describing gene edition and brain modification, varying in several dimensions mentioned above. We measured the overall attitudes toward the technologies, but also specific convictions about consequences of their implementation. We accounted for individual differences (e.g. participants ideology) and technologies’ perception (e.g. their radical character or self-interest involved). Our results are in line with the previous research, but at the same time they offer some interesting insight, e.g. on the role of self-interest and interaction effects of technologies dimensions.

Marta Maj: doktorantka w Zakładzie Psychologii Społecznej (Centre for Social Congitive Studies), pod opieką prof. dr hab. Małgorzaty Kossowskiej, asystentka w Interdyscyplinarnym Centrum Etyki UJ w projekcie BIOUNCERTAINTY. Absolwentka biologii i psychologii UJ.
