12 October 2023 - Dariusz Miękisz - Ascribing moral responsibility and decision-making capacity to agents with various emotional/intellectual disturbances

We have the pleasure to invite you to another research seminar. This week Dariusz Miękisz is going to give a talk: "Ascribing moral responsibility and decision-making capacity to agents with various emotional/intellectual disturbances”. The seminar will take place on Thursday 12th of October at 5:30 p.m. in the room 25 on Grodzka Street and via MS Teams.

Abstract

Moral responsibility (MR) and decision-making capacity (DMC) are mirror concepts that depend on agent’s competence for making conscious, deliberate choices. A recent study showed that framing addiction as a neurological disorder rather than a psychological one mitigates responsibility of the addicted (Rise&Halkjelsvik, 2019). Another study showed that possessing adequate competence but failing to exercise it due to impulsive acting still counts as a sound decision for the folk intuition (Demaree-Cotton&Sommers, 2021).
In this talk I want to present a design of a study that compares how agent’s intellectual and emotional properties influence our ascriptions of MR/DMC to this agent. I will also explore the idea that ascribing MR/DMC is a secondary cognitive process that bears some resemblance to the primary cognitive process of ordinary moral judgment.
