4th November 2021: Research seminar: Replication Crisis, Perspectival Realism, and the Malleability of Statistics

4th November 2021: Research seminar: Replication Crisis, Perspectival Realism, and the Malleability of Statistics

We have the pleasure to invite you to a research seminar in the ‘BIOUNCERTAINTY’ research project. The main talk on this week's seminar will be "Replication Crisis, Perspectival Realism, and the Malleability of Statistics". The seminar will take place on Thursday, 4th of November 2021 at 5:30PM in room 25 in the Institute of Philosophy of Jagiellonian University, Grodzka 52, Cracow and via MS Teams.

Abstract: Inconsistent and unstable results have become a characteristic feature of contemporary empirical sciences. The results of data-intensive disciplines (such as econometrics, epidemiology, (clinical) medicine and psychology) lack stability. The presence of inconsistent results has a detrimental effect on theoretical discourse, policy guidance, and clinical practice. My purpose is twofold. First, I argue that alternative methodological commitments producing inconsistent statistical results are often plausible in the sense that one cannot appraise inconsistent studies based on their methodological quality. Second, I support a perspectival view on inconsistent statistical models and argue that inconsistent results are relevant for different clinical or policy decisions. My argument proceeds with analyzing examples of some recent medical studies.
