4th of April 2024 — Edmond Awad — Online Serious Games as a Tool to Study Value Disagreement
Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics (INCET) UJ invites for its next research seminar enitled: "Online Serious Games as a Tool to Study Value Disagreement" by Edmond Awad (University of Oxford). The meeting takes place on the 4th of April 2024 r. at 5.30 p.m., Grodzka 52, room 25 and via Teams platform.
Abstract
This talk explores the innovative use of online serious games, like the Moral Machine and MyGoodness, as tools for investigating value disagreement in experimental philosophy. Through interactive and engaging platforms, these games present discrete choice experiments that prompt users to make decisions in morally complex scenarios. The aim is to uncover how individuals' values guide their choices, thereby shedding light on underlying ethical principles and societal norms. Drawing from firsthand experience in developing such online platforms, this presentation will delve into the potential of serious games to facilitate rich, empirical research into value disagreement. We will discuss both the opportunities these tools offer for reaching diverse and global audiences and the challenges in ensuring meaningful, insightful engagement.
