Abstrakt: Anecdotal evidence suggests that normative disagreements are more resilient than disagreement about matters of fact. In the present set of studies, we explore the possibility that this phenomenon is rooted in domain differences in people’s synthesis of group consensus. Drawing on the existing research in moral and social psychology, we hypothesize that people might be more reluctant to ascribe certainty and/or consensus when they face a normative (as opposed to factual) uncertainty/disagreement.
To explore this possibility we conduct a series of vignette studies, and ask participants to assess a battery of public decision problems, in which groups debate about either normative or factual matters. Employing a novel type of visual stimuli, we semi-continuously manipulate the level of uncertainty surrounding both norms and matters of fact. Our preliminary results point toward certain differences in the way people characterize disagreement about normative and factual questions.
