Abstrakt

Recent work on trust in science, particularly in connection to debates over the role of values has pointed to deliberation as a way of fostering public trust. Yet, criticism has also been raised regarding deliberation and public engagement. Excessive focus on reaching consensus can exclude particular groups or individuals, which is often detrimental to trust. At the same time, the exclusion of bad-faith actors is justifiable, particularly when their goals are obstruction and perpetuation of an unfair status quo or when the problem subject to deliberation requires an urgent response. Furthermore, increasing trust among groups that already distrust scientists raises additional challenges. This paper will draw on work from political philosophy to frame deliberation so as to overcome such shortcomings with particular reference to the case of medicine and public health. We will employ systemic approaches to deliberation from democratic theory, which look beyond individual deliberation sites, towards the context in which they take place. Furthermore, we will bring together critiques of impartiality from political philosophy, the philosophy of science as well as psychological work on empathy and perspective taking, showing how they enable a stance towards science that considers another’s interests as if they were one’s own.
