18 June 2019: Research seminar - Emilia Kaczmarek (Warsaw) - How to distinguish reasonable medicalization from over-medicalization?

We have the pleasure to invite you for yet another research seminar organized as part of the ‘BIOUNCERTAINTY’ research project: Emilia Kaczmarek (Warsaw) - How to distinguish reasonable medicalization from over-medicalization? The seminar will take place on Tuesday, 6th June, at 5:30 pm in room 25 of the Institute of Philosophy, 52 Grodzka Street.

Abstract

When does medicine overstep its proper boundaries? The aim of my presentation is to outline the pragmatic criteria for distinguishing between reasonable medicalization and over-medicalization. During my presentation I will: (i) show various consequences of both well-founded medicalization and over-medicalization; (ii) justify why I think that the issue of defining appropriate limits of medicine cannot be solved by creating an optimum definition of health; (iii) explain the meaning of four guiding questions proposed to help distinguish reasonable medicalization from over-medicalization and (iv) use them to evaluate different examples of medicalization (actual and hypothetical ones).
