18th of October 2019: Research seminar - Jeroen Hopster (Universität Graz) - Climate Possibilities and Precautionary Principles

We have the pleasure to invite You for yet another research seminar this week. The subject of the seminar is 'Climate Possibilities and Precautionary Principles' and it will be delivered by Jeroen Hopster from Universität Graz. The seminar will take place on Friday, 18th of October, at 1:00pm in room 25 of the Institute of Philosophy, 52 Grodzka Street.

Jeroen Hopster is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Graz, where his research focuses on climate ethics. In 2019 he obtained a doctoral degree at the University of Utrecht as a member of the research project 'Evolutionary Ethics'. He also studied at the universities of Harvard, Melbourne, Edinburgh and Amsterdam.

Abstract: There are different kinds of uncertainties involved in climate science and policy. In this talk I distinguish between some of them, and reflect on their ethical implications. Specifically, I reflect on the question of whether there is a need, in the context of climate science, to advance so-called possibilistic scenario’s. What are possibilistic scenarios? Are they distinct from probabilistic predictions? And what is their relevance for precautionary principles?

The language of the event is English.
