We have the pleasure to invite you to another research seminar in the ‘BIOUNCERTAINTY’ research project. Next week Frank Ursin and Cristian Timmermannwill give a talk: "Intraoperative application of mixed and augmented reality for digital surgery: A systematic review of all ethical issues”. The seminar will exceptionally take place on Wednesday 10th of May at 5:30 p.m. in the room 25 on Grodzka Street and via MS Teams.

Abstract

The use of mixed and augmented reality (MR/AR) technologies in surgery is gaining popularity, but their implementation raises ethical. In this talk, we will present the findings of our systematic review of ethical issues related to the use of these technologies in surgical interventions. We analyzed 50 articles and found 143 ethical issues in ten categories. The importance of avoiding overreliance on new technology and ensuring proper regulation to maximize their potential benefits while minimizing risks must be acknowledged. Surgeons must exercise sound judgment in recognizing the limitations of intraoperative MR/AR application and data issues must be handled with care to protect patient confidentiality. Furthermore, issues surrounding continuous professional development must be addressed to ensure that surgeons have the necessary skills and knowledge to use these technologies effectively. Finally, the potential unintended long-term impact on the human workforce in terms of negative training and the fear of being surveilled also require further attention. In conclusion, the ethical concerns must be thoughtfully addressed to ensure their safe and effective implementation and to maximize their potential benefits.
