Abstract

Standardly, risk is analysed in terms of probability times severity. Recently, two alternative accounts of risk have emerged that replace the probability component in the standard account with modal closeness and normalcy, respectively. Here, it is argued that non-standard accounts of risk are (1) in dire need of further conceptual improvement, and (2) unsuitable as part of any theory of normative decision-making, because they will lead to long-term worse outcomes.
