Abstract

This paper develops an original account of the nature of the interpersonal obligations that arise when we share an intention. Shared intentions involve interdependent participatory intentions such that one is fulfilled if and only if all the others are. Appealing to the thought that obligations are valuable to us when our agential fates are shared in this way, I defend two claims: each participant is obligated to the others to do their part, and this obligation is grounded in an interest we have in controlling our normative environment. I then consider what these claims entail for the social relationship that exists between partners in shared agency.
