Abstrakt

Our daily experience of reasoning is filled with moments of conflict, and we are often keenly aware of them. When decisions become challenging, we weigh competing arguments and consider counterfactuals. Various considerations pull us in different directions, shaping and reshaping our preferences and swaying our choices. This phenomenologically rich picture of conflict is largely absent in current theories of judgment and decision-making. Particularly, when reasoning about problems for which one lacks a clear strategy, such as moral dilemmas, the experience of conflict tends to persist over time. In contrast, problems we are trained to solve may evoke conflict only when a given strategy fails, resulting in an outcome incongruent with a prior choice. In this seminar, I present data from an eye-tracking study that supports this idea, offering a closer, real-time view of conflict.
