Abstrakt
Attention is a crucial resource for epistemic agents. It is the pre-condition for evidence uptake, and as such, its rational allocation is essential for rational inquiry. Epistemology, however, has mostly neglected the problem of attention. This paper constructs a Bayesian model of a basic case of splitting attention between two competing sources of variable reliability. The results indicate that under many conditions, it is rational to pay some attention to the less reliable of two sources. This extends arguments in favor of preferring diversity at the cost of some reliability.
Furthermore, it is argued that the model and its implications raise new issues for the theory of epistemic injustice, opening a new field of potential conflicts between the demands of individual epistemic rationality and a fair distribution of attention.
