Abstrakt

In The German Ideology, Marx and Engels famously contrast a capitalist society in which workers have an “exclusive sphere of activity, which is forced upon him, and from which he cannot escape”, with a future communist society in which it is  “possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming a hunter, fisherman, shepherd, or critic.' This view has often been ridiculed for the way that it appears to call for an abolition of the division of labour. In this talk, I argue that it is a mistake to think that Marx’s conception of the good society requires a complete abolition of the division of labour. Central to my argument is the idea that specialisation in complex occupations is consistent with the kind of flourishing that Marx prized. Indeed, I go further and argue that, given his commitments, Marx’s conception of the good society requires a division of labour. However, while a complete abolition of the division of labour is unnecessary, the flourishing of all does require eliminating a division of labour that consigns some to lives of drudgery. Instead, I defend the idea that a good society is one in which this work is shared between everyone able to perform it.
