Abstrakt
That people need meaning in life is no longer in dispute in the field of empirical social science—meaning in life has been tied to a host of positive outcomes with respect to mental and physical health. It stands to reason that people also need meaning at work, given that most of us spend the better part of our waking lives at work. Recent research has revealed that meaningful work is positively associated with work engagement, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, goal-directed behavior, intrinsic motivation, meaningful living overall, life satisfaction, and increased likelihood of seeing work as a calling. In keeping with a comprehensive and integrated theory of meaning, meaningful work will arise from both objective and subjective bases. Qualities of meaningful work can be enhanced long-term by specific features belonging to the work itself, that is, objective factors. At the same time, the attitude or orientation of the worker toward work has been demonstrated to have an impact on perceptions of meaning, that is, subjective factors also play a role. According to an emergent consensus in the psychology and philosophy literature, meaning is comprised of a cognitive domain of coherence, an affective domain of significance, and a volitional domain of direction. The measure of meaningfulness at work that I propose interprets these domains as relevant to the issue of meaning at work specifically, and I present items that tap into each of these domains and invite workers' responses to how they experience (or don't experience) their work as meaningful across a whole range of relevant dimensions.
