7 listopada – Nicholas Vrousalis – What’s unjust about structural injustice

Interdyscyplinarne Centrum Etyki UJ (INCET) zaprasza na kolejne otwarte seminarium badawcze! Referat "What’s unjust about structural injustice" wygłosi Nicholas Vrousalis. Spotkanie odbędzie się 7 listopada o godzinie 17:30 w sali 25 przy ul. Grodzkiej 52 oraz za pośrednictwem platformy MS Teams.

Abstrakt

This paper argues that specifically structural injustice involves mere groups of agents wronging other mere groups of agents, without these groups amounting to group agents. Under sexism, for example, pluralities of men as a whole wrong women as a whole, even if no man wrongs any woman and even if men as a whole do not form an organized group agent. This sub-agential form of group wrongdoing, I argue, distinguishes cases of specifically structural injustice from other forms of injustice, as well as pure from impure cases of structural injustice. So “blaming the game, but not the player” amounts to this: there is some plurality of players that wrongs others, even when no individual player wrongs any other. The paper sketches the implications of this idea for class, gender, race and draws some provisional conclusions.
