Interdyscyplinarne Centrum Etyki UJ (INCET) zaprasza na kolejne otwarte seminarium badawcze! Referat "Formalizing standpoint occupancy: Why, how, and how not to" wygłosi Klee Schöppl. Spotkanie odbędzie się 3 października o godzinie 17:30 w sali 25 przy ul. Grodzkiej 52 oraz za pośrednictwem platformy MS Teams.

Abstrakt

Standpoint theory, and feminist epistemology in general, insightfully critique assumptions ingrained in traditional epistemology. However, it is these problematic assumptions of the latter that make their way into many (agent-based) models employed in computational social epistemology (CSE) and philosophy of science. This talk works out the relationship

between these two fields, arguing that CSE needs to better accommodate feminist critiques, but that in doing so, it could help standpoint theorists study interesting phenomena and questions otherwise inaccessible to them.

I then zoom in on a particular part of CSE, Bayesian epistemology, and work out why it cannot ‘solve’ standpoint occupancy, nor replace non-formal theorizing; before I offer a way in which it can be helpful: With the right Bayesian framework, standpoint occupancy may be adequately represented in agent-based models of epistemic communities.

I offer such a formal account in Bayesian terms: Standpoint occupancy as adherence to constraints on agents' perspectives, in a model that encodes perspectives in subjective Bayes' nets representing the causal relationships between available arguments about a subject matter.
