Abstrakt
Thousands of people today seek legal advice on social media, leaving behind a wealth of data on interactions between laypeople and the legal system. If analyzed correctly, this data could provide valuable insights for legal philosophers exploring how laypeople understand legal concepts. In this project, I develop a pipeline based on the Llama 3.1 80B language model to identify and analyze over 120,000 Reddit posts recounting stories of legal trouble caused by ignorance. To demonstrate the value of this dataset, I apply it to investigate whether the ease of generating counterfactuals can help explain the asymmetry between ignorance of law and ignorance of fact.
