Abstrakt

I argue that use of personal generative AI avatars—both digital and robotic—opens a novel type of responsibility gaps, resulting from a control paradox in the user-avatar relationship. These 'proxy-gaps' emerge from the complex dynamics between human users and their GenAI-powered avatars, wherein the avatars function as personal proxies while simultaneously exercising autonomous control and knowledge acquisition. This duality challenges established frameworks of moral responsibility attribution, as it disrupts traditional assumptions about agency, control, and epistemic conditions necessary for responsibility ascription.
